THEY say all good things come to those who wait and finally we're able to stop the clocks and wave our flags for another example of home grown design talent.

Paulin Watches is the brainchild of siblings Charlotte, 30, and Elizabeth Paulin, 25.

Their eponymously titled brand creates minimal, classically designed watches all meticulously hand built in their home studio in the West End of Glasgow, proving that beautiful design needn't come with a premium price tag.

One of the key aims of the brand is to bring the manufacture of affordable, high quality watches back to Britain and after three years of designing and sourcing components from suppliers around the world, their first watches are now available to buy.

The debut range has three styles, each with three to four variants.

The design aesthetic is best described as an understated take on the classic dress watch.

Powered by extremely reliable and accurate Japanese quartz Miyota movements, the range features 316L grade stainless steel cases and Italian leather straps.

Originally from Dingwall the sisters decided to base Paulin in Glasgow because, 'Glasgow's great.'

"It's got everything as a city," says Elizabeth, managing director at Paulin who studied in the city and who's background is in floristry.

"It's big enough to keep you here but not so big that you want to leave.

"A lot of our friends went to London after uni but they're all moving back now."

Asked about the genesis of the brand, Charlotte, the creative director of Paulin, who studied drawing and painting in Edinburgh, said that like most good things the idea for the company came about, "after an evening of drinks."

"Charlotte had some old friends up who she'd known from art college, all very similar tastes," said Elizabeth, "and they got onto talking about how, out of all the watches out there, they couldn't find one they really liked."

So the girls set out to design one with notable support from Charlotte's fiancé, founder of RHA, the Glasgow audio company, who has given them some invaluable help in taking the concept forward to where they are now.

Not that the journey hasn't been without significant difficulties to surmount,

Elizabeth said: "Getting the watches assembled here was difficult, but it's just the beginning for us.

"One piece at a time we're going to swap out imported parts for locally made, which is harder than it sounds because the knowledge base disappeared from Scotland years ago.

"We're the only Scottish, and probably the only British, watch to be built here since Timex closed in 1993.

"Next week we're getting an old clicker press delivered that started life in the 1950s at a Northampton shoe factory, so we'll be cutting out watch straps ourselves soon."

Asked what their ambitions are going forward for the brand they said there is yet another talented sister yet to be revealed and dreams of their own store.

"We only launched the brand three weeks before 2015, so hopefully a lot will happen in our first full year. I have a feeling it'll be a steep learning curve!" says Elizabeth, "although our other sister, Eleanor, graduates from Fashion at ECA this summer and we're going to get her on board and perhaps we'll be in a position financially by then to give her some autonomy to branch out under the same brand."

A talented trio indeed with the singular aim to become the epitome of quality British craftsmanship.

Let's face it, their sleek and sophisticated unisex watches designs would make a timeless gift to treasure, and certainly something to keep in mind in the run up to Valentine's Day.

Paulin Watches are priced from £120 for the 28mm C50 model to £180 for the 40mm chronograph and are available now from paulinwatches.com and www.thebrotique.co.uk
