A storm of debate over the colour of this dress which a Scottish girl started on Tumblr has spread through social media - but this Vine video reveals the answer.

Some see the dress as white and gold, and others see the dress as black and blue. Alana MacInnes, of Uist and Caitlin McNeill, from Colonsay, sought views on Tumblr about the colour of the dress for a wedding.

A minority of people see the dress as lavender and gold when you first look at it - me included - but that doesn't seem to be included as an option.

But a quick search on Amazon reveals that the dress is, in fact, black and blue.

This vine shows that it's all just a trick of the light.

So why did we not see the original colour at first?

Experts say it's all down to primal biology and evolution: Light reaches the retinae of our eyes, sending a signal to the brain about the colour of the object. Light that illuminates the object can change our perception of the colour.

So some people are ignoring the bias - i.e. still seeing it as black and blue, but some can't help but see it as gold and white.

Then there are people like me, who can't comprehend why no one sees it as lavender and gold. Maybe we just haven't fully evolved yet. *Crawls back into cave.*
