THE sun was beating down on the city as we parked up the Buick and weaved through the sweltering haze.

The Moll was in the mood for a light dinner in the sunshine - which was far from what I had in mind.

So, as we climbed down the stairs to basement level and Glasgow's newest burger restaurant, I knew the food would have to be good to make up for dragging her away from the rare rays.

Burger Meats Bun opened its doors for the first time last Friday but rumours of the best burgers in town had already reached my ears.

Inside, it struck me as simply decorated and the waitress showed us to a small two-seater table.

The Moll made herself comfortable as I ordered two perfectly chilled bottles of Sam Adams Boston beer.

I was pleased to see Innes & Gunn and West St Mungo beer from "down the road" on the drinks list, even if we didn't plump for it.

The Moll, in her finery, looked slightly out of place among the casual dinners but remained intrigued.

The menu was straight to the point – three different kinds of beef burger, two chicken burgers and a 'nae meat', veggie option.

There are no starters, more a whole list of sides so we decided on a couple each.

I opted for the Fiery Burger with Toma Raschiera, chipotle mayo, jalapenos.

The Moll was taken by the Big Cheese topped with Dale End cheddar and burger sauce.

My hope that the food would live up to its reputation turned to fear when the waitress plonked down kitchen roll and tin can full of cutlery.

The Moll turned up her nose and I squirmed in my seat.

We avoided eye contact for what felt like an hour (I am sure it was a perfectly acceptable 10 minute wait) until the waitress brought our food.

There wasn't a plate in sight - burgers wrapped in paper, take-away style, and sides in paper cartons.

"I supposed it saves on the washing up," I joked. The Moll was in no laughing mood as she gingerly unwrapped her dinner.

Mouth-watering smells then had my taste buds on edge.

The juicy burger was succulent and with just the right amount of heat, balanced perfectly with the soft and sweet brioche bun.

After her first cheesy bite, The Moll perked up, cast aside her knife and fork, and got stuck in.

The sides were equally good. They might have been small but the Buffalo wings packed a punch and tasted perfect with a thick lashing of the creamy blue cheese dressing.

The 'slaw was the perfect combination of zingy and creamy and even the house salad was a fine-tuned triumph with fresh lettuce, tomato, cucumber and shredded cabbage in palate-invigorating citrus dressing.

Soon our over-dinner conversation was punctuated with rounds of slurping and chin dribbling. The Moll even started to appreciate the kitchen roll - a necessity, in fact.

The friendly waitress beamed at us and asked with a smile (and a tone which suggested she already knew the answer) "enjoying your food?"

The Moll gave an enthusiastic nod, to drive home the point.

We decided to try the only two desserts on the menu.

The Burger and Shake intrigued us, and while I enjoyed my meaty feast, I didn't have enough space for round two.

But the sweet version was as cute as a button.

Inside a macaroon was a chocolate ganache 'burger' topped with mango 'cheese' and raspberry sauce 'ketchup'. The accompanying mini vanilla shake was so light and delicious I could have guzzled a gallon.

The hot and fluffy sugar-covered mini-doghnuts were drenched in the accompanying butterscotch dipping sauce.

The Moll headed off to wash her hands (and face) and power her nose while I paid up and we called it a night.

It's heavy on flavour and light on dining etiquette but the food at Burger Meats Bun is unapologetically simple and delicious.

"Next time I won't wear my best outfit," declared The Moll as we bid farewell.

I am sure it won't be long before we meat again.
