A BUTCHER is tasting success after being crowned champion in the Scottish sausage "steaks".

Cambuslang butchers Hugh Black & Sons have been crowned the champions in the Traditional Sliced Sausage competition organised by the Scottish Federation of Meat Traders.

Their sausage was chosen as the best in the west of Scotland at an event in Glasgow and went on to win when it went up against the other regional qualifiers.

The competition, which had 70 entries, was judged by a panel of experts at the City of Glasgow College.

Hugh Black, who started the business 27 years ago, was presented with his trophy yesterday by Bryan McAusland, of sponsors McAusland Crawford.

Mr Black said: "We all have our speciality products, but this award means so much to us as it is for a product which is the 'bread and butter' of Scottish butchers trade.

"The reason for this success is the amount of hard work we have put into improving our recipe in the last few months."

John Mair, of the hospitality department at City of Glasgow College, was one of the final judges. He said: "The winner stood out for its texture and flavour. It was tasty, not too solid and if you bought that you would be back for more."
