David Beckham enjoyed a weekend of hospitality in Scotland as he celebrated the global launch of a new whisky he has helped to create.

The retired footballer and style trendsetter was joined by his wife Victoria at Gilmerton House in North Berwick, East Lothian, on Saturday for a private dinner to toast the launch of Haig Club, a new single grain scotch whisky from Diageo.

The superstar couple were joined at the glamorous do by celebrity friends Gordon and Tana Ramsay and entrepreneur Simon Fuller.

Beckham then followed it up with a further launch event at star chef Tom Kitchin's restaurant in Edinburgh on Sunday.

The spriit, described as "distinctive and sophisticated" by the distillers, was developed in partnership with Beckham and Fuller.

Unveiling the drink, Beckham said: "I am incredibly proud to have been part of the creation of Haig Club.

"I think we have made something really special. For me it has meant understanding how whisky is made and enjoyed, and then working with some incredible people to write a new chapter for Haig."

The sportsman, who played for teams such as Manchester United and Real Madrid during his glittering on-field career, added: "I appreciate a well-made drink and I like to take my time and enjoy it - I try to drink better, not more."

The nip is made at Scotland's oldest grain whisky distillery, Cameronbridge in Fife.

According to Diageo, the House of Haig can trace its whisky producing roots back to the 17th century, making the Haig family Scotland's oldest grain whisky dynasty.

Haig Club senior vice president Kathy Parker said the whisky is "designed to be different".

She said: "Historically, single grain whisky has been in the shadow of single malts and blended scotch, but Haig Club represents a new direction in scotch whisky, which brings single grain scotch to the forefront."
