We are fast approaching Winter Solstice, otherwise known as the shortest day of the year.
On Wednesday, December 21 this day will be celebrated around the world and is a significant time of year in the Nordic calendar.

As people everywhere get ready to mark the shortest day and longest night of the year, here are three top tips from Highland Park to celebrate Winter Solstice.
Set the scene
As it’s the shortest day of the year you will need some extra light, so create a warm atmosphere with candles. Or if you want to brave the elements and head out into the dark a bonfire can add a sense of occasion, but don’t forget to wrap up.
Share the occasion
Winter Solstice is a great time for feasting with friends. Gather with your friends, enjoy each other’s company, share stories and indulge in a foodie feast. Roasting, stewing and baking some winter favourites and adding seasonal touches such as zesty oranges and toasted nuts will guarantee a feast for the senses.
Serve the perfect drink
A warming whisky is the perfect drink of choice for a Winter Solstice celebration. In a heated tea cup add the following:
- 50ml Highland Park 12 Year Old
- Tsp honey
- 130ml Rooibos Tea
- Add a dash of angostura bitters or aromatic bitters
- Garnish with some lemon peel or some freshly grated nutmeg
