We are fast approaching Winter Solstice, otherwise known as the shortest day of the year.

On Wednesday, December 21 this day will be celebrated around the world and is a significant time of year in the Nordic calendar.

The narrative of Highland Park is deeply rooted in Nordic traditions with one in three people on Highland Park’s home in Orkney having Viking ancestry.

The people of Orkney take great pride in honouring the spirit of their Viking ancestors and Winter Solstice is a momentous occasion, which is typically celebrated with good friends, bonfires, music, dance and Highland Park single malt whisky.

As people everywhere get ready to mark the shortest day and longest night of the year, here are three top tips from Highland Park to celebrate Winter Solstice.

Set the scene

As it’s the shortest day of the year you will need some extra light, so create a warm atmosphere with candles. Or if you want to brave the elements and head out into the dark a bonfire can add a sense of occasion, but don’t forget to wrap up.

Share the occasion

Winter Solstice is a great time for feasting with friends. Gather with your friends, enjoy each other’s company, share stories and indulge in a foodie feast.  Roasting, stewing and baking some winter favourites and adding seasonal touches such as zesty oranges and toasted nuts will guarantee a feast for the senses.

Serve the perfect drink

A warming whisky is the perfect drink of choice for a Winter Solstice celebration. Highland Park 12 Year Old is a rich and well-balanced whisky boasting a honey sweetness, followed by fruity notes with a hint of gentle smoke, making it an ideal single malt to be enjoyed on its own this Winter Solstice. Or why not try it in a Highland Park Hot Toddy?

In a heated tea cup add the following:

  • 50ml Highland Park 12 Year Old
  • Tsp honey
  • 130ml Rooibos Tea
  • Add a dash of angostura bitters or aromatic bitters
  • Garnish with some lemon peel or some freshly grated nutmeg
