SCOTLAND'S first specialist pastelaria will celebrate one year of business this week.

Pastéis Lisboa, located on Byres Road, will be handing out free samples of Pastel de Nata on the hour, every hour, from 9am to 5pm as the bakery celebrates its first birthday on Friday, August 11.

Using an award-winning Portuguese recipe, the bakery was opened by Emma Airley and Sebastian Bacewicz, bringing "the most amazing Pastel de Nata you'll ever taste" to Glasgow.

As well as selling the traditional version of the pastries, the bakery also sells a vegan version and seasonal variations throughout the year.

Glasgow Times:

Speaking to the Glasgow Times ahead of the opening last year, Emma said: "There’s nothing comparable.

"There is no one else doing it and we love them.

"It’s a known product, people know it because of holidays to Portugal and with it being in supermarkets.

"It’s their bestselling bakery item, it’s the thing that’s going first in the bakery section, and we thought if they’re selling that well at that standard then we could sell these."

Glasgow Times:

Over the past year, the bakery has regularly sold out, with Emma and Sebastian saying they wanted to thank customers for their support over the last year by giving out free Pastel de Nata.

Emma said: "We wanted to do something a bit different to thank our customers for all the support they’ve given us over the past year and for embracing our bakery so warmly.

"This is just the beginning of an exciting journey, as we hope to bring the taste of Portugal to more locations and create memorable experiences through our catering services and events.

"We look forward to many more years of serving up our authentic pastéis de nata to the people of Scotland and beyond."

Glasgow Times:

Pastéis Lisboa was opened after Emma and Sebastian received a £40,000 loan through the British Business Bank's Start Up Loans programme to turn their business into a reality.

The bakery is one of 1000 business in Glasgow to have received over £8million in funding from the programme since the scheme launched in 2012.

Barry McCulloch, senior manager, UK Network, Scotland at the British Business Bank, added: "We’re thrilled to see the tremendous success of Pastéis Lisboa as it celebrates its first anniversary.

"Emma and Sebastian’s custard tarts have been a huge hit for Glasgow’s food scene, and it’s a superb example of a business that’s taken advantage of a niche market and brought something new to the city.

"We wish them continued success and look forward to seeing where the next year will take Emma, Sebastian and their team."
