The Glasgow Times is featuring the six candidates hoping to be voted Glasgow's Favourite Business for 2023.

The award, sponsored by this paper, is part of the Glasgow Business Awards organised by Glasgow Chamber of Commerce with Royal Bank of Scotland as the main sponsor.

If the walls of the legendary Glasgow nightclub The Garage could talk, they would drop enough names to fill an ocean.

On the cusp of its 30th birthday, The Garage has hosted some of the biggest names in music since 1994: Prince, Marylin Manson, One Direction, Gun, Paolo Nutini, Kasabian, the Kaiser Chiefs, Biffy Clyro, Newton Faulkner (to name a few).

But it is the persistent championing for Glasgow's nighttime economy from parent company Hold Fast Entertainment that makes The Garage one of the nominees for Glasgow's Favourite Business.

Andy Clark, head of marketing, said: "I think the nomination is well deserved, in all honesty.

"We are the biggest venue in Scotland. We are renowned, people do know us, but it's nice to get some recognition because, like other businesses, we've worked hard for years.

"During Covid, loads of venues shut for good but we managed to come back just as strong if not stronger."

As a respected voice in the industry, the team at The Garage have been campaigning for better recognition of nighttime industries, most recently doubling down on the need for better night buses in Glasgow.

Andy said: "A big thing for us now is joining forces with the night bus operators, First and McGill's.

"We realised how important it is, not just for our business, but for the whole of the nighttime economy including workers.

"We're trying to let the whole of Glasgow know about them and the three to four nights they will be on hopefully.

"Not just for our venue but other venues as well."

Andy describes The Garage as a place for everybody that keeps its doors open every single night of the year - even during the notorious Beast from the East in 2018.

He said: "During the white out, we opened our doors and still ended up with over 300 people in the club that night.

"When every other business battened down the hatches, we stayed open so people had somewhere to go.

"Us being open every single night of the year means people always have an option.

"No matter what happens in the city centre, we will always be open for people to come and have a night out."

The winner of The Glasgow Times Award for Glasgow's Favourite Business will be revealed at the annual Glasgow Business Awards ceremony, taking place at the DoubleTree by Hilton Glasgow Central on Thursday 5 October 2023. Voting closes at midnight on September 18, 2023.
