GLASGOW has a long and proud history and there have been many occasions down through the years when the city has had plenty to celebrate.
Today's picture recalls the day when it commemorated the 800th anniversary of the granting of the city's burgh charter.
It happened on May 10, 1975 and saw a procession through the city, seen here as it passes Trongate. Thousands of people lined the streets as the procession, which included 120 decorated floats, made
its way from Kelvin Way to Glasgow Green. After it arrived comedian Billy Connolly sang his Welly
Boot Song.
The following day, more than 10,000 people gathered in George Square for what was BBC TV's biggest ever production of Songs Of Praise.
A full festival of events were held that month, being billed as the "greatest celebration the city has ever seen". Events included a Highland Gathering at Scotstoun and a Song For Glasgow contest, sponsored by the Evening Times .
Schoolchildren across the city were given Glasgow 800 mugs as a souvenir. Wonder what the mugs are worth now?
