WHEN the weather is fine, you know it's the time, for messin' about on the river.

The popular song is certainly relevant for this picture from the River Clyde from June 1958.

It shows the Glasgow Schools Rowing Club 16th Regatta near Glasgow Green,

a day out that attracted thousands of spectators to see a record 69 crews competing for four trophies.

The event was attended by the Lord Provost Myer Galpern, with Allan's Glen retaining the St Mungo Quaichan invitation event, while Possil School, who had only recently joined the schools' club, winning the Tub Fours Championship for the Boyd Cup.

The other trophy winners were Hutcheson No 4 in the Coronation Cup and St Joseph's Coollege, Dumfries, in the Murchison Cup.

Glasgow Schools Rowing club began in 1942 and initially boated out of Clydesdale Rowing Club. In 1951, with the help of Glasgow Corporation, they established their own boat club at the East boathouse in Glasgow Green.

By the early 1960s 18 Glasgow schools and more than 500 pupils regularly took part in rowing activities at the green on Wednesday afternoon and Saturday mornings.

The club declined in the 1970s, but the introduction of indoor rowing to all Glasgow Secondary Schools in 2007 sparked a revival in rowing activity amongst local schools.

Now more than 120 pupils from seven schools regularly row from the boathouse.
