TOWERING above her pupils, this teacher probably had no difficulty in putting the ball through the basket to score at netball.

But it is not quite so easy when you are a good few feet smaller and only eight to 10 years of age.

However, with a bit of instruction, this sports teacher was able to get her message across in 1936 and the youngsters look as if they are enjoying their lesson on Glasgow Green. The Templeton carpet factory building is visible behind them.

Netball has always been seen as a women's sport, which is not surprising as it was designed in 1891 because women in skirts could not move as freely as men.

But that is not to say it is a slow sport, because the action can move from end to pretty fast. Players are not permitted to move more than one step while holding the ball and must pass the ball in three seconds.

If you fancy playing, Glasgow Netball Association has 18 clubs which play in a league on a Wednesday and Thursday night and make up the 27 teams in three divisions. The season re-starts in September. Matches are played at the Emirates Arena, Glasgow Club Holyrood, Langside College, Craigholme Sports Complex and Glasgow Caledonian University.
