GLASGOW has been praised on numerous occasions through the years for the generosity of its citizens, but raising almost £15million in one week is some feat.
Yet that was the amazing total collected back in the days of real austerity...the Second World War.
In 1943 the city was raising money for Wings For Victory week and the final day of
June 5 saw £2,190, 475 added to bring the total to £14, 726,409.
The main focus of activities was in George Square, when this massive bomber helped to focus the public’s mind on the drive for cash.
Schools, savings groups and industry all contributed. Hutchesons’ Girls Grammar School set a target of raising £1000 and beat that to collect £5085, while Park School handed over £7300.
All the money helped in the war effort, with 26,263 planes being built in Britain that year as the Allies started to inflict major damage on Hitler and Mussolini’s forces in Europe.
In July major bombing campaigns were launched against Hamburg and also Rome. Cash raised in Glasgow was helping to earn victory.
This mouth-watering selection of sweets was to be found in J&A Ferguson in Union Street in April 1968.
The store is no longer there but the firm still produces confectionery at its base in Greenock
