THE financial crisis of 2007 brought the world of banks, stocks and shares into the spotlight.
London is now regarded as one of the world’s leading financial centres, but there
was a time when Glasgow was a focus for the country’s moneymen and women.
The city had its own stock exchange, which was at  the corner of Buchanan Street and St George’s Place (now renamed Nelson Mandela Place) in a building  erected between 1875 and 1877.
The Glasgow Stock Exchange had been founded in 1844 and it was to be one of five exchanges, the others being in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Dundee and Greenock.
However, in January 1964 the Scottish Stock Exchange started trading following
a merger of the city exchanges, with the main one sited in Glasgow, while those in Edinburgh, Dundee, and Aberdeen operated as local branches.
In 1971, it was all-change again when the local exchanges closed completely and the Glasgow building was remodelled. Two years later  the Scottish Stock Exchange was no more after it merged into the London Stock Exchange.
The final bell had been sounded for selling stocks in Glasgow.

Glasgow Times:

The back courts of Glasgow tenements could be grim, but the residents of 26 Kelvinside Avenue, in Glasgow’s West End, were doing their best to make them neat and tidy as they tended the gardens.
