IT was author Lewis Carroll who brought us the wonderful fictional character of The Hatter, often called The Mad Hatter, in his book Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland.
These three ladies loved hats and costumes and they had no problem stealing the Hatter’s name when they opened up their costume hire shop in Nithsdale Road, Pollokshields.
They called it the Three Mad Hatters and, as you can see Chrissie Affleck, on left, Brendan Allen, centre, and Marion Hillier were happy to play up for the camera.
They were on the lookout for new premises because their shop was bursting at the seams, with more than 300 outfits all hanging on rails and on shelves.
News of their store had spread abroad and they were even getting orders from Turkey and Italy.
Of course, people love dressing up for occasions and costume hire – formal and fancy dress – has boomed in the last few decades. The original Mad Hatter would have approved.
It’s milk time for these pupils of St Denis’s School in Dennistoun as they enjoy a break from the writing and arithmetic lessons. Going by the sunshine in the background we hope that milk was still cold!
