Crowds came to welcome the Queen when she visited Gorbals in 1961

Glasgow Times:

GLASGOW would have been the toast of the United States when this cargo arrived on the other side of the Atlantic during the 1950s.
These barrels of whisky were in bond at King George V dock waiting to be loaded up for the sea crossing.
The dock was the largest on the upper Clyde when it opened in 1931 and is now used by vessels transporting dry bulk cargoes, such as animal feed and grains, as well as chemicals and industrial equipment.
But during the dock’s lifetime, whisky has retained its position as an important export for Scotland, with the US customers playing a significant role.
These days, markets in the Far East are gaining in influence, as the country sends 40 bottles a second, it’s claimed, to buyers in 200 countries around the world.
But just this week, the focus switched, with news of a deal taking a Scottish gin to cocktail bars in New York.
Favourite tipples may change but quality never goes out of fashion.
