THIS renovation of Gorbals burial ground shows the gravestones of local tradesmen being cleaned up and repaired in 1952.
The tools depicted on the stones show clearly the trade of the person interred in the burial ground where some stones dated back to the 1700s.
The work came some seven years after newspaper reports said that vandalism in the cemetery had “reached a new peak” with its “virtual destruction”.
It was acknowledged that, as well as the attacks on the gravestones by thugs, the weather and old age had also taken their toll.
Part of the problem, it was reported, was that the railings which separated the burial ground from the road had
been taken for salvage during the war.
So the work to repair the cemetery was long overdue when it was tackled in 1952, when, not only were repairs undertaken, but a rest garden was created.
It opened to the public in May that year following work that had cost £2500, with further development to be carried out when funds were available.
