THE pose is familiar and if they cried ‘Freedom!’ then you might assume it was a still from the film Braveheart, starring Mel Gibson.
But, in fact, this was seven years before the Australian starred in and directed that Oscar-winning movie about Scottish hero William Wallace.
This picture is from February 1988 and shows part of the preparations for the Glasgow Garden Festival, which was due to open in April.
George Wallace, left, and Ian Walls, of the Scottish Clan Battle Society, were the claymore-wielding duo who stood atop the replica of the Wallace Monument as it was put into position at the site.
The 20ft structure was part of Stirling District Council’s £200,000 display for the event.
The festival proved a great success, attracting 4.3million visitors. Wonder if that’s where Mel Gibson got his idea for Braveheart ...
This boat on the move was not making waves ... because the Clyde Chandlers boatyard in Dalcross Lane, Partick, was surrounded by tenements, so boats had to be winched on trailers to reach the water
