SINGER Sydney Devine makes his annual appearances at the Pavilion this week and it is incredible to think he has been hitting the high notes on the Glasgow theatre’s stage for more than 40 years.
In May 1980 he was still in the early years of that run with the Renfield Street venue, but was still able to celebrate 25 years in showbusiness ... and his run that week was titled his Silver Subilee Show. He is pictured with Peppa George, who appeared in the show.
His career began with a television appearance in 1957 and the man sometimes dubbed ‘Steak and Kidney’ is still one of of Scotland’s most successful performers, having recorded more than 40 albums with total sales of over 15 million.
His singing has often been the butt of jokes, particularly from sarcastic Radio Clyde DJ Frank Skerret in the 1970s, but as Sydney used to say: “I loved it when he made those jokes. They helped my record sales go up!”
