DEFENCE forces and emergency swervices continually undergo training and carry out special exercises to make sure they are ready for anything.

This was the sight in Glasgow’s West End in September 1941 as preparations were made for a possible gas attack by German forces.
It was part of a weekend to test the readiness of the civilian population and also the military and Civil Defence services. The assumption was that Glasgow was the principal target, with docks and oil installations the main objectives.
Tear gas was released and those civilians who had forgotten their gas mask suffered for their folly. ID cards were also checked and some civilians were kept at bayonet point by troops for being in places where they should not.
Thankfully, it was all just an exercise.

All the figures that year were created by a group of city artists known as the Sculpture Club. The others were Stephen Beddoe, Neil Ferry and Andrew Scott, all graduates of the Glasgow School Of Art
