IT was a case of ‘We shall not be moved’ for these tenants in Glasgow back in July 1988.

The 21 families lived in numbers 20 to 36 Galloway Street, Springburn, and they were opposed to plans to sell their homes to construction firm Whatlings as part of an £8million regeneration scheme for the area.

Glasgow District Council had offered them alternative accommodation, but the feelings of local people were summed up by one 60-year-old tenant, who had lived there for 24 years, who said: “The area is rundown and some of the flats have been empty for years, but we want the council to do
up our flats, not sell them for a profit.”

Springburn has since undergone major reconstruction work, with large numbers of properties demolished.

And the work is continuing in the north of the city, with the Red Road flats having recently been among the buildings disappearing from the city skyline.
