THERE was a Major event in 1997, when Pure Glasgow took to the city’s streets.

Young Grant Thomas got a shock though when he came face to face with a giant puppet, not unlike former Prime Minister John Major, which represented the Federation of Small Businesses in the parade.

Glasgow Times:

He is designed as half workman and half business executive – partly dressed in overalls and partly dressed in a suit.

The cavalcade of 29 of the giant puppets was to leave George Square and head for Glasgow Green, where there was to be live music, theatre attractions and children’s fun.

Pop singer Jimmy Somerville was to feature at the Pure Pink Party in Virginia Street, while ace sax player Tommy Smith was to guest at a jazz/fashion stage in the Italian Centre.

About 60,000 people were expected to enjoy the event, the biggest one-day event taking place in Scotland that year.
