BARLINNIE Prison in Glasgow has undergone many changes in recent years, trying to help inmates who want to be rehabilitated and move away from a life of crime when they are released from their sentence.
Those efforts are not always highlighted, but you can be sure that if something bad happens then it will make news everywhere.
That was the case back in January 1987 when prisoners rioted at the jail. It broke out on January 5 after an incident in B Hall and lasted until the morning of January 10.
There was extensive damage to the hall and a number of guards were trapped in cells and other areas, while five staff were taken hostage.
As the riot progressed some prisoners climbed on the jail roof, pictured, with some even showing off the riot gear they had taken from guards, while others threw down roof slates.
The siege was to last a total of 110 hours, the longest of its kind in Scotland, before ending with all staff released.
Recent pictures of old Glasgow shops brought to mind Sellyns in Springburn Road. The store, sited opposite Queenshill Street, billed itself as ‘Fashion for the family’. It was on this site for 30 years but is now no more
