A CROWD of more than 100 people waited in Kintra Street, Govan, where six families had barricaded themselves into their condemned homes in defiance of an eviction order.

The crowd was waiting to hear what happened when the sheriff officers arrived to put the families out of the condemned buildings.

The families were taking no chances and kept watch out of windows, with food being sent up on the end of  a rope.

The campaign to resist eviction was organised by Andrew McMahon, the Communist municipal candidate for Fairfield who initiated a “whip round” among the crowd to buy food for the families.

Mr McMahon said: “There are 17 empty houses just 200 yards away from here and if the worst comes to the worst and these people are put out today, I will advise them to occupy these houses.”

John McClure, who had sealed off his home with an angle iron, said: “They will have to break down barricades if they want to get in here.”

Councillor George Robertson was looking into the families’ cases.
