The Gorbals enjoyed a right royal day on June 30, 1961 when the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh visited to find out the latest stages of redevelopment of the Glasgow scheme.
And for some local people it was the day they were able to say the Queen had visited their home.
The Royal couple went to six houses in the area, with Prince Philip visiting four in Sandyfaulds Road and the Queen going to two – the
single apartment of Hugh and Catherine Dempsey at No 71, and then their next-door neighbour, Mrs Edna McColl.
When the Queen left No 71 she joined the Duke at No 65, where the Prince had complimented one woman on how spick-and-span her home was.
The Royal couple also saw demolition work in Waddell Street, with part of a derelict tenement being pulled down.
The homes scheduled for demolition were being replaced by high flats in the style of the model, above, that was shown to the Queen.
It was a day of celebration on Saturday, April 19, 1958 when St John’s Methodist Church, at the junction of Sauchiehall Street and
West Nile Street, was reopened after renovations costing about £17,000. The church, built 75 years previously, was the only one of any denomination in Sauchiehall Street. Sadly, it is long gone, having been demolished in the early 1970s
