Brolly good show for Royal launch

FOLLOWING yesterday's picture of the Clyde steamer Queen Mary II, today we join the soaking-wet crowd at the launch of the Cunard liner which 'stole' her name.

In typical Glasgow fashion, no matter how much you prepare for a great day, with the Queen in attendance, you can never depend on the weather.

With so many brollies deployed, the crowds at John Brown's yard at Clydebank wouldn't have much of a view of the ship, right.

So large was the liner that on her way down the slipway, she was slowed by 18 drag chains, which checked her progress into the Clyde, a portion of which had had to be widened to accommodate the launch.

This week, with British Pathe having posted all their old newsreels to Youtube, you can now go online and watch footage of the launch.
