LOOKING more like a Medieval castle than a kitchen, this great hall was where the cooking staff at Stobhill Hospital, in Springburn, used to prepare healthy and nutritious meals for patients and staff

With its triple height roof, hammer beam ceiling and great steaming cauldrons of food, it looks like something out of a fairy tale.

Built between 1901 and 1904, the hospital eventually opened on the same day as Western District Hospital at Oakbank, in Maryhill, and the Eastern District Hospital, in Duke Street. The original buildings are now B-listed structures.

With almost 2000 patients to feed, the domestic staff faced the Herculean task of conjuring up around 6000 meals a day. That's an awful lot of porridge, a mountain of mince and a veritable sea of custard.
