Clyde move caught Cooney on hop

RADIO Clyde man Paul Cooney, right, looked slightly shell-shocked when this pair started stripping the station's Anderston Centre studios.

He needn't have worried, it wasn't the bailiffs. Radio Clyde was on the move, to a new broadcasting base at Clydebank.

The station, which launched on Hogmanay 1973, was Scotland's first legal commercial broadcaster. Previously, pirate stations had broadcast from ships moored off Scotland, and outside the legal reach of the broadcasting authorities.

The Anderston Centre, a brutalist concrete construction, featured shops, offices, a bus station and flats, all connected by concrete walkways and elevated link roads. It never really caught on and has long since been redeveloped.
