Today's picture shows workmen ripping up the tramlines on West Nile Street. Grinning for the camera, they seem pleased in their work, even allowing for the lack of sophisticated lifting machinery and protective clothing.
This was just the start of the process of removing the trams from the city's streets. The last tramcar made its final journey in 1962.
These days, trams are a distant memory, with the sight of gridlocked traffic much more common.
Many people believe the trams should never have been taken off the rails - but a few people in Edinburgh may dispute whether that means it would be worth the disruption and cost of bringing them back.
