A GLIMPSE of bustling Glasgow in 1893 shows that while some things are unrecognisable from life today, in other ways not much changes.

The lady in her long dress reminds us more of a pension company advert than of people we see in the street as we struggle into work today, and we'd be hard-pressed to find Nestles milk on supermarket shelves. But few wouldn't recognise the Pears brand and know exactly where to find it, or recognise some of the buildings that line the north bank of the Clyde at Jamaica Bridge.

The gents in the bottom right hand corner, wearing hats are striding out, have their modern-day equivalent - probably minus the fancy hats - who stride purposefully about the city's new financial services district on the other side of the river.
