Farmer's fields took a 'malling'

SHOPPERS arriving at the Braehead mall, via the Govan Road roundabout, often don't realise that, hidden behind the hedges and sheds on their right lies the George V Dock.

Opened in 1931 to accommodate the larger vessels then beginning to arrive on the river.

Driving into Braehead, many people will also be fascinated by the fine but derelict Georgian house which sits by the Sainsbury's roundabout - that's it hiding in the trees bottom right in the picture.

The building is all that remains of Shiels Farm, sometimes known locally as the 'Butterfly House', due to the fine, butterfly covered wallpaper which remained on its walls long after the last family moved out.

Next time you're on a Braehead run, look a little bit closer, and just imagine what the old farmer would have made of all the changes on his land.
