DETECTIVES mounted a fishing expedition with a difference on the Clyde in 1958 as they tried to find a handgun used by a serial killer.
Between 1956 and 1958, Peter Manuel, the New York born son of Scottish parents, had gone on a killing spree across the West of Scotland.
He was finally caught when he tried to pay for a round of drinks in a city bar using new bank notes he had stolen from the scene of one of his murders.
Dubbed the 'Beast of Birkenshaw', he was eventually convicted of seven murders, although he admitted to 18 (police and prosecutors believed the number of victims to be closer to 15).
On July 11, 1958, at Glasgow's Barlinnie Prison, he became the third last criminal to be hanged in Scotland.
