THERE was a united front at Bellahouston Park in 1938 when the joiners helping to build the Empire Exhibition came out on strike to demand higher pay.

Within days of the men downing tools, the plumbers on the site walked out in sympathy, giving the event's organisers a real headache.

Thankfully, the bosses dug into their cash reserves to up the daily pay rate and all the men returned to work within a few short days. After all, with the world en-route to Glasgow, nobody wanted to leave the job half done.

In this picture, taken outside the site entrance on Paisley Road West, you can see the skeletal structure of Tate's Tower taking shape.

The other thing to note is the number of bunnets on display. It seems if you wanted to get ahead in 1938, you got a hat.
