AS a sign of changing times, you could do worse than this glimpse of Glasgow's underground railway, taken in 1968.

The subway is among the oldest in the world, opening in 1896, and is predated only by the London Underground and the Metro in Budapest.

In the late 60s, the carriages were dark with wooden floors and red or brown leather upholstery. Most surprising to modern eyes is that smoking was permitted, although only in the carriages with the brown upholstery!

Since these days, the network has undergone major modernisations and improvements (including a total smoking ban, of course), and the carriages are bright and modern.

But the traditional stops of the Inner and Outer Circle remain the same as always.
