Glasgow's Garden Festival took place in 1988, when a 100-acre site was developed to host the event on the banks of the Clyde.

Formed in the eastern part of Prince's Dock on the south bank of the river, part of the dock was infilled before 300,000 trees and plants were used to create the festival.

More than 4million visitors went along to see what it had to offer during its five months, and that included the 240ft Clydesdale Bank Tower and the Coca-Cola roller coaster.

It also offered tram rides which rang up more than 4000 miles during the event.

And, of course, the visitors had to be fed - on 100 tonnes of chips, 20 miles of hot dogs and 400,000 ice creams.

Five such festivals were held around Britain, with Glasgow's proving to be the most successful, helping to kickstart the city's resurgence.
