GLASGOW has had a lot of trouble with potholes over the last few years, but at least workmen did not have to deal with a crater this size.
No wonder the workmen on the left is taking a close look - he knows he is going to be very busy for quite some time having to deal with this.
The road collapse happened in Adelphi Street, in the Gorbals, in March 1942 when building work was going on nearby.
Reports then said the collapse threatened the nearby Adelphi Street Public School but, thankfully, it escaped damage.
In fact, despite the massive changes that have seen the redevelopment of the Gorbals since the 1960s, the school building, which opened in 1894, is still there. It now houses an annexe of City Of Glasgow College.
Another notable building in the area was the Adelphi Distillery, which was founded in 1826. It stood just south of the Victoria Bridge, but distilling had stopped long before this picture was taken.
Its buildings were demolished between 1968 and 1970, and its chimney dismantled in 1971.
