THIS railway engine precariously placed on a bridge in Glasgow caused a scare more than 60 years ago.

Women screamed and ran for their lives when they thought the locomotive and its coal tender would topple from the bridge that spanned Cleland Street, Gorbals, in April 1954.

Fortunately, the derailed engine came to rest against the side of the bridge at an acute angle. The relieved engine driver and his firemen jumped to safety and police were quickly on the scene to cordon off the street below.

Mind you, it did not stop some cheeky local people taking advantage of the accident ... they nipped in to pick up some of the coal that had fallen on the street.

As for the engine, it was soon back in service.

However, five years later it was withdrawn and was scrapped in 1964.
