Once at the heart of Scotland's steel industry, the Lanarkshire villages was once home to the mighty Colville's steel mills. That's the factory's abandoned sheds you can see in the background.
Once an agricultural community, the discovery of coal in the early 1800s saw the local lads swap the bright open fields for the pitch-black of the pits. Much of the local coal was taken by train to Glasgow to feed the city's incessant and growing need for heat and power.
British Steel took on the steel mill in 1967 and operated until its closure in February 1986. Today, the industry has gone and the bird song has returned.
