THESE guys were out on the pull in 1935 as they helped fit out the liner Queen Mary at John Brown's Yard in Clydebank.

In their work jackets (navy blue with added oil stains, we suspect) and near identical bunnets, they were giving it the old heave-ho on the end of this hawser, or perhaps it's a painter or just length of old rope.

What was on the other end is anyone's guess.

Work began on the classic Cunarder, then known only as "Hull Number 534", in December 1930. Work was halted in December 1931 due to the Great Depression and Cunard applied to the British Government for a loan to complete 534. The loan was granted, with enough money to complete Queen Mary and to build a running mate, Hull No. 552, which became Queen Elizabeth.
