Midwives and nursing staff proudly show off the youngsters born that day, with some of the babies looking as if they are having a real bawl.

Rottenrow was more than just a hospital. It was a training ground, while pioneering work in ultrasound and Caesarean section was also done there.

Princess Diana opened its specialist ward in February 1991, but in 2001 the hospital moved into an extension in nearby Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

The building was bought by Strathclyde University and later demolished. There is now a park on the site and a sculpture of a giant nappy pin by George Wylie named Maternity.

We wonder if Wills and Kate will need nappy pins -
