GLASGOW had a starring role in 1953 when the Ealing Studios film The Maggie was partly shot in the city.

Directed by Alexander Mackendrick, it was a story of a clash of cultures between a hard-driving American businessman and the wily captain of a Clyde Puffer, and was inspired by Neil Monroe's Para Handy tales.

The cast, Alexander MacKenzie, Abe Barker, Tommy Kearins and James Copeland, are seen here walking across the Glasgow, or Jamaica, Bridge.

Young Tommy, who had been spotted aged 13 acting in the Glasgow Scout Gang Show, came from Govan, but was soon rubbing shoulders with the stars.

Sadly, a film career didn't beckon and he ended up working beside his dad in the city's Harland & Wolff shipyard.
