IT wasn't only horses that hauled loads at Glasgow's old Candleriggs fruit market, men also took a turn between the shafts.

The wee fellow in the foreground is almost hidden by his haul of seed potatoes and is positively dwarfed by the hulking Clydesdale with his cartload of crates.

The wholesale fruit and veg market was always a bustling place, with traders doing deals and the constant roar and toot of delivery vans.

The place also had an aroma all of its own, with the tang of oranges, apples and bananas scenting the air with their heady perfumes.

The area also had its own gang of gallus Glasgow wasps. Come the end of the day it was a different story, as rotting cabbages and crushed carrots were shovelled up to be sold to local farmers as animal feed.
