WHILE many Glasgow wifies were still struggling down the road to the steamie, by 1956, the better off could afford to buy washing machines.

And wash was all they did.

There was no spin cycle, hence the hood-mounted mangles on these Goblin models, seen here in Lewis's in Argyle Street. And once the clothes were wrung dry, you still had to wait for a 'good drying day' to peg them out on the line.

Within a couple of years, twin tubs would appear on the market and pretty soon the city's steamies would go the way of the dinosaurs.

By the 1960s, launderettes had also appeared on almost every high street, meaning cash rich but time poor people could entrust their dirty smalls to a total stranger for the price of a 'service wash'.

Aye, so much for the good old days...
