THAT'S the problem with urban planning - you can design all the swooping walkways you like, but if people think it's quicker to get across by walking in the road, they will.
This is Glasgow's Charing Cross in 1974 just after the completion of the new M8 ring road.
Pedestrians ignore the footbridge in favour of the quicker route across the lanes of traffic. Perhaps it's just as well there weren't too many cars about that day.
The development certainly revolutionised Glasgow's motorway network, but also cut a swathe through the city centre, separating it from the west end.
And even today, with the latest technology at level crossings, it's a daunting prospect for a pedestrian to get from one side to the other, especially if you're in a hurry.
