What is it with Little Mix? I'm no girl band basher but I'm struggling to understand why this lot keep dressing up like bad cartoon characters.

Are these four women meant to be modern style icons? The problem is not that they're wearing outlandish outfits.

Through the years Bowie, Blondie and Beyonce have impressed us with showstopping outfits we all love and that will go down in musical history.

No, the real issue here is how uncomfortable Little Mix (annoyingly dubbed "my little muffins" on the X Factor by Tulisa) seem in their clothes.

It looks as if they ran through the wardrobe department at Disney World and emerged at the other side, shellshocked and forced to appear on Alan Carr's Friday night show.

I can see what they're trying to do. Judging by their recent performances, including at last weekend's T in the Park, I believe they're going for a little mix (sorry) of 90s girl band TLC, Charlie Chaplin, Joe Montana and Minnie Mouse.

Now I'm reading back this list and thinking they must look spectacular. Who doesn't love bowler hats, dungarees and American football tops three sizes too big? But it doesn't work.

Add layers of foundation, fake eye lashes and tartan trews and you have all the ingredients their stylist is working with.

Now to another worrying thing. The girls' look has creeped onto the high street, which has become a sea of this bizarre clothing.

On every shop rail there's a jumper with NERD or GEEK written on it, childish prints that only a three-year-old could pull off and the tiniest crop tops that, well, only a three-year-old could pull off.

Who is wearing these things?

Maybe I'm old fashioned, or just boring, but there's something to be said for grown up clothes.

What's wrong with a chic dress and classic accessories. Less is more, no?

It's not that our pop stars shouldn't wear crazy costumes. They are there to entertain us after all, and we want to see them look out of the ordinary.

But the first rule of getting dressed is making sure you're comfortable in what you're wearing. This applies to everyone, even Bowie.

Someone needs to tell the Little Mix ladies that when you're unhappy with what you're wearing it shows.

Despite their wardrobe mix ups, I admit that a few of their songs are catchy. And, you never know, maybe their look will catch on, too.
