Does anyone else get The Fear when an invitation arrives in your inbox or through the door?

Whatever it is - a Christmas works night out, an awards ceremony or a birthday party - it means that you are required to present yourself in An Outfit.

My biggest worry is that I'll turn up overdressed, although that's probably because I'm most comfortable in jeans and could navigate myself through any occasion in a pair of converse.

For many people the concern of appearing underdressed is the biggest issue.

However, after seeing Noel Gallagher on the Scottish Style Awards red carpet in an unironed check shirt and leather jacket, it's safe to say it doesn't matter what you wear as long as you're confident. And it helps to be a one-time member of Oasis.

With the festive season round the corner, I've been trying to work out the best way to never get caught in the wrong clothes at the right party.

As with everything, it's the boring options that makes the most difference.

Although Alexa Chung looks as if she chucked on that Stella McCartney and pulled it together with a red lip, she did not.

It was planned and planning is key.

First work out what the evening is asking of you. If it's black tie then it will have to be formal. Think cocktail dresses or floor length.

If it's a Christmas meal with your workmates there will be no need for flowing gowns - and probably best to steer away from the clothes that reveal too much skin.

For a bigger occasion - a wedding, an awards do - I would always advise getting a bit of help.

It's easy to book in and get your face done by one of Glasgow's talented make-up artists.

For the Style Awards I went to Illamasqua in Debenhams who gave me a smoky eye look, fake eyelashes and nude lip, while the new Benefit counter at House of Fraser offers a complimentary make-up service along with their treatments.

If it's a very formal event then book in with a hairdresser for a bouncy blow dry or chic up-do.

With hair and make-up taken care of, the pressure is off and you can just focus on your clothes.

Whatever you decide to wear it's always a good idea to invest in a fail-safe outfit you're comfortable in to have on standby. That could be a dress or a good pair of trousers and a good quality shirt.

Always try your outfit on days before the event and make sure you can walk in your shoes.

When accessorising go for the pieces that make you feel good. Be it that bracelet you were given as a gift, or the box clutch you bought yourself on holiday.

Lastly, don't forgot that a coat could kill the look. If you've put the effort into your outfit then top it off with the right cover-up.

A good quality wool coat is a solid investment.

And don't underestimate the power of a great leather jacket. It worked for Noel.
