THE Second World War was on, and everybody had to do their bit.

And for the more than 300 young men of Glasgow's Scout and Rover groups, that meant getting in some practice at helping out the St Andrews Ambulance Association.

Here, a member of the association is giving instruction in stretcher drill to boys in the city's Elmbank Crescent in June, 1940.

The Scouts were being prepared to help deal with air raid casualties.

For a lot of the boys their training would come in useful over the next four years as many of them swapped their neckies and woggles for khaki and rifles to do their bit to liberate Europe from the Nazis.
