Riverside Festival
Cue hysteria down by the Clyde this weekend, as Electric Frog and Pressure's Riverside Festival returns for another two days and nights of mayhem.
Continuing the current trend towards superstar collaborations, Siriusmodeselektor are headliners. This coming together of Berlin banger merchants Siriusmo and Modeselektor is a bit special because it's a one-off tour: this is the only time they'll play in Glasgow, so it's fitting that they'll be calling the shots at one of the biggest events of the summer. Like a fleeting, cross-border summer romance, there follows a bunch of dates across Europe, and then they'll go their separate ways.
Their fellow Berliner and techno DJ Len Faki also headlines the South Stage on Friday, returning to Glasgow for the first time since his stunning Pressure set in December. Other highlights from the first day include Londoner Joy Orbison and his trailblazing, futuristic bass music, revered house DJ Julio Bashmore and heavily-hyped techno duo Karenn - aka Blawan and Pariah - playing live.
On Saturday, the Teutonic techno theme continues as Sven Väth headlines the festival's main stage. The influential German is a global player and - although an overused term - one of the biggest names in techno. Simply put, there could hardly have been a bigger booking. The Chilean techno poster boy Ricardo Villalobos also brings his steely, driving sounds alongside Detroit's Magda and Russian siren Nina Kraviz. Other ones to watch include French former raver Popof, Chicago house producer Ron Trent and the iconic Detroit superstar Carl Craig.
The afterparties are at SWG3, kicking off from 10pm both nights, and feature the likes of Robert Hood and Bashmore, as well as local legends like Optimo and Slam.
€¢ Electric Frog and Pressure Riverside Festival, tomorrow and Saturday, Riverside Museum, 4pm - 11pm, weekend tickets £75/day tickets £40
€¢ Aftershow, tomorrow and Saturday, SWG3, 10pm - 3am, £8
Sub Club
If you can't wait until tomorrow to get going, the Subbie has Switzerland's (via Vancouver) hottest electronic artist Cyril Hahn in tonight. "If you wanna get down to business my songs are just what you need," he told Attack Magazine in 2012, before releasing a string of remixes that were blatantly not conducive to getting down to any kind of business, least of all the corporate kind.
Nevertheless, his woozy, hip-hop inspired compositions are fascinating and ought to be experienced in the flesh. Saturday sees Missouri's (it's all about cult stars with obscure origins down Jamaica St this weekend) Osunlade take over at Subculture. On the veteran DJ's first appearance in Glasgow, he'll be spinning house from throughout the ages, with backup from the evergreen Harri and Dom.
€¢ Cyril Hahn, tonight, Sub Club, 11pm - 3am, £5
€¢ Osunlade, Saturday, Sub Club, 11pm - 3am, £10
Numbers
The notorious Numbers crew are used to tearing up venues several times the size of Queen Street sweatbox La Cheetah. But they're also always up for defying expectations, so this hastily-organised party features the crew's kingpin Spencer alongside a secret special guest, who may or may not be one of their super-hip celebrity DJ pals picked up on their travels around the world's finest clubs. You'll just have to wait and find out, wont you?
€¢ Numbers - Spencer and special guest, tomorrow, La Cheetah, 11pm - 3am, £5/£7
Mungo's Hi-Fi
Local reggae collective Mungo's Hi-Fi take over the Art School again on Saturday, bringing with them French heavyweight dub soundsystem OBF. They'll be going tête-à -tête with countryman Shanti-D, one of France's most in-demand MCs at the moment. They're backed up by Wobbley Social Soundsystem, Samson Sounds and Jungle Sale Sounds.
€¢ Mungo's Hi-Fi Soundsystem, Saturday, The Art School, 11pm - 3am, £8

Mono
Mono, the cafe, bar and record shop run by indie veteran Stephen McRobbie of The Pastels, is home to those with discerning tastes when it comes to food, music and everything else important in life. Not only does this Kings Court complex home to one of the city's best vegan eateries, it also contains Monorail - a fiercely independent record shop stocked with shelves and shelves of rare vinyl. It has new releases from big and obscure names, reissues from the indie heavyweights, and curios to crane the neck of the most obsessive record hunter. It also supports the local scene by carrying singles and EPs by local DIY bands.
One of the things most often written about Mono is its community vibe, but it's hard to escape that feeling. It's warm and cosy in there, and when it's dark outside - with the condensation dripping down the windows and the dim light falling in though the magnificent glass dome in the ceiling - it feels like somewhere you could hang around forever.
Its unique schedule of events too makes it a mecca for the indie community. It regularly plays host to low-key gigs by genuine superstars: back in 2008 Moby (who's been in the news this week for playing a star-studded party in LA for a man bullied online) stopped by at short notice to play an acoustic set. Edwyn Collins, Belle and Sebastian's Stuart Murdoch (who played at a packed Hydro on Friday), and Teenage Fanclub are among the acts who have played, often for free. Institution is a word that gets bandied about a lot these days, but it certainly applies to this most venerable of venues.
