GRAFFITI is an eyesore that makes a depressing sight in communities and can lead to other vandalism and a general acceptance of run down conditions.
Thankfully the people of Cardonald were not prepared to put up with the repeated vandalism of a white wall on their main street.
Their solution was to take over the space and turn it into an attraction rather than allow it to be a blank canvas for a few youths eager to empty spray cans.
The result is a striking mural of the city skyline and the production involved local young people, charities and arts projects.
It might not be to everyone's taste but the artwork is surely much better than the wall of graffiti and the endless task and cost of repainting to the local business.
Many others could take inspiration from the Cardonald project and turn eyesore sites into their very own community artwork and give a platform for local talent.
Rather than put up with the graffiti, the people of Cardonald have told the vandals they don't want their names scrawled over their walls and replaced it with something bright and colourful.
It is a the first step in people taking control of their environment and encouraging everyone to take pride in their area.
