STEALING part of a war memorial to a war hero is a despicable act, showing no respect and a callous disregard for the feelings of the community.
People in the Gorbals created a unique tribute to one of their own, who died in action and whose bravery earned him the Victoria Cross.
Whether it was vandalism or theft for scrap it is contemptible and hopefully the culprits will be caught, shamed and punished.
If it is theft, it is the latest example of why a crackdown on rogue scrap dealers, who accept material knowing it is most likely to have been stolen, is needed.
Often the targets are plaques or monuments, lead from roofs or cables from railways, leaving buildings at risk of flooding or people exposed to electrical dangers.

This new scheme must be embraced by all the legitimate dealers and enforced by the industry and licensing authorities to ensure it is effective.
