IN my role as an Athlete Mentor (I am a Commonwealth gold medal-winning gymnast) I recently visited Isobel Mair School in Clarkston.

What a truly inspirational day I had, meeting pupils and teachers involved in Sky Sports Living for Sport.

It was wonderful to see what a positive impact the scheme, which uses sport stars and sport skills to improve the lives of young people, has had.

The pupils I met were full of enthusiasm, commitment and energy.

My role is to inspire pupils, but I came away feeling incredibly inspired myself.

Sorry for living

I SEE that the government is looking into the number of OAPs in Scotland.

They say we are a drain on resources.

What about all those people in Scotland who have never paid a penny into the system – why don't they look into the amount of money that costs the country?

Why does the government keep telling us how to eat/drink /excercise, and when we do, they complain that we are living too long?

Luvly Jubilee

I ENJOYED your Past Times picture special to commemorate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee (Friday).

Everyone says we Scots are not keen on celebrating the jubilee.

Why not? Your photos showed the strong links she has had with the Clyde and the city over the years, so let's get out this weekend and wish her well!

Easy answer

READER V. Reid (Letters, May 24) asked a question which has a simple answer.

The letter wanted to know how an independent Scotland would pay for its NHS and the like.

The answer is this – the same way that the other 196 independent nations in the world pay for things – all of which are surviving, thank you very much.
